RF Interference Detection and Characterization Through Machine Learning

Spectrum-NET incorporates Spectrum Effect's patented technologies for the detection and characterization of RF interference sources that pollute spectrum and degrade network performance. The Spectrum-NET solution utilizes a Machine Learning Framework for its RF interference characterization technologies is shown in the figure below. Spectrum-NET utilizes outlier detection techniques to identify sub-performing network cells `with potential RF interference issues. These cells are further analyzed by a suite of feature extraction modules that characterize individual interference events on the basis of: spectral, temporal and spatial characteristics. Based on these characteristics, the rule-based classifier determines the interference type. The Spectrum-NET Machine Learning Framework allows new rules to be dynamically learned and existing rules to be dynamically optimized based on user-feedback. Additional algorithms assess the performance impact of external and unintended internal interference, helping the operator to evaluate the significance and prioritize follow-up for the events.

RF Interference Localization

Spectrum-NET leverages the interference event detection and classification processing described above to identify On-Site interference sources such as faulty cell site electronics or multi-carrier intermodulation products.

Interference events that are determined to be Off-Site or not originating from within the local cell site itself are further processed through interference localization processing to determine the approximate origin and or geographic extent of the detected interference events. Traditional triangulation/trilateration methods are employed to calculate the locations of source(s) of the external RF interference. The accuracy of the location determination is further enhanced by leveraging its patented transmission matrices technologies and patent-pending Localization Grid Report. Spectrum-NET creates probabilistic grids around the area where most highly impacted cells are located. This approach provides the mobile operators with the most actionable information for locating the geographic location of the external interference.

Application to Spectrum Sharing Systems

Spectrum-NET’s ability to detect, classify and localize RF interference events is directly applicable to developing spectrum sharing technologies such as CBRS and LSA.
